UM-Flint adds new journalism program

FLINT — The University of Michigan Board of Regents recently approved a new journalism program at the University of Michigan-Flint.

Currently, no journalism degree is offered by the UM-Flint. The new program will offer students either a major or minor in journalism.

“A strong understanding of ethics and commitment to community marks the new journalism undergraduate major program at the University of Michigan-Flint,” said Interim Chancellor Jack Kay.

The program was created in response to years of requests from students majoring in the media studies field in the communications degree program.

“Instead of teaching students to work as newspaper or TV reporters, our focus is online journalism because that’s where almost everything is happening in the world of news,” said Mike Lewis, program director.

While Lewis emphasizes the importance of online reporting, he maintains that the program will still work on reporting community news.

“Community news media remain strong, and the need for people to know what’s happening in their communities has never been stronger,” he said.

The program is expected to launch in the fall. — Anna Stodola
