School board appreciation presentation by Siple principal

DAVISON — “Won’t you be my neighbor?”

Citing the teachings of Fred Rogers, Siple Elementary Principal Christy Flowers honored members of the Davison Board of Education, Jan. 13, during a Board Appreciation Month presentation at the monthly board meeting.

The presentation was to recognize board members Kathleen Sudia, Karen Conover, Mark McGlashen, John Hair, Diane Rhines, Matthew Smith and Granger Stefanko for their efforts year-round.

Flowers honored the commitment and dedication of the board members by singing Mr. Roger’s theme song, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” and sharing with the board and audience some of Roger’s most famous and influential quotes.

“With the resurgence of Mr. Rogers, and a documentary and film with Tom Hanks, I’ve picked several of my favorite quotes,” said Flowers. “Real strength has to do with helping others.”

Flowers presented each board member with a framed quote from Rogers, each indicating it was for board appreciation month 2019-2020. The framed quotes were paid for by district administrators.

Among the quotes presented were:

“The gifts we treasure most over the years are often small and simple. In easy times and tough times, what seems to matter most is the way we show those nearest us that we’ve been listening to their needs, to their joys, and to their challenges.” – Fred Rogers

“We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say ‘It’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.’ Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.” – Fred Rogers

Sara Howes, vice president of the Davison Education Association, said the DEA was also recognizing the board when she announced the teachers’ union was contributing money, on the board’s behalf, to the district’s Shop with a Hero program.
