CARROLLTON — The Cardinals got off to a stellar start this season by winning the Carrollton Invitational Tuesday. With a score of 54 points the team was able to hold off Birch Run, which finished second with a score of 83, and Clare, which took third with 88.

Davison was led by Ethan Koester, who finished fourth overall with a time of 18:35. Matt Heasty was fifth best with a time of 19:43, while Aaron Wagner (11th place) 19:43, Jacob Squires (14th place) 19:54 and Troy Simpson (20th place) 20:20 all ran extremely well to pull off the win. Lake Fenton’s Brian Smith was the fastest on the day with a time of 17:42.

The Cards were one of just 11 teams who competed, and their consistent team running is what put them well over the top.

The girls’ team also competed Tuesday finishing fifth out of 10 teams with a score of 140. Clare, which has won the meet the last four years in a row, easily won again this year with 20 points while Sanford Meridian (101), and Lake
Fenton (108) rounded out the top three. Clare dominated the competition as six of its runners finished in the top 10.
For Davison, Taylor Wasniowski finished 16th overall with a 25:40 effort. Emily Sauer also ran well, finishing 20th with a time of 26:10, while Tess Niedzielski, who finished 22nd with a time of 26:22, rounded out the medalist winners for the Cardinals.

“I thought the meet went quite well, Marcos Sallinas (Carrollton coach) did a really nice job of organizing everything,” said Davison girls coach Ron Whitman.

With 11 boys’ teams and 10 girls’ teams, this was the largest turnout for the Carrollton Invitational. Davison’s next meet will be next Tuesday when they travel to Flushing to take on the Raiders in their Big Nine opener.
