While there are Daniel Pearl World Music Days events all over the world, the Humanity in Harmony Music Festival is the only one in Michigan.

The "Sixth Humanity in Harmony Music Festival” will showcase artists and instruments from different cultures stringing diversity together, a journalist in residence and an opportunity for local Journalism students to win $1,000 in scholarships.

Daniel Pearl was a journalist; a reporter for the Wall Street Journal who was killed in Pakistan while reporting on the unrest in that part of the world. The story was turned into the film “A Mighty Heart” starring Angelina Jolie as his widow.

The sixth Humanity in Harmony Music Festival features an eclectic mix of styles and culture. Opening the program for the sixth time will be; the Dort Honors String Quartet, four very talented high school musicians from the Flint School of the Performing Arts; Jesse Ray and the Carolina Catfish, Larry McCray, We Are the Northern Lights and Sheldon Low.

As part of the memorial to Daniel Pearl, the Humanity in Harmony Music Festival supports $1,000 in scholarships in journalism given by the Flint Jewish Federation. This year’s scholarship winner will get $500, second place $350 and third place $150

Students in grades 9 through 12 who are interested in competing for the scholarship will be asked to write an essay on this theme: Reporters are under fire it seems, whether they are ducking bullets in Afghanistan or pot shots from politicians. Are Journalists the Enemy of the People?
