Relay for Life this weekend at Dort Federal Event Center

FLINT – On June 23-24 participants from across Genesee County will join together for Relay For Life of Genesee County  at the Dort Federal Event Center to Join the Magic of Relay and help the American Cancer Society attack cancer from every angle.

The event starts at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Highlights of the 24 hour event include the Survivor Celebration at 6 p.m. Saturday.  If you have heard the words "you have cancer" you are invited to join us for a special ceremony and reception celebrating you.  The luminaira Ceremony is at 9:45p.m. during this time special luminaria bags will be lit in honor or memory of  loved ones.

There is lots of family friendly fun to help celebrate our Disney theme; bounce house, vendor fair, face painting, fun laps, silent auction, Princess and Pirate party (1-3 p.m.), visit from Tink and Rapunzle, games and even a painting party!

The American Cancer Society is fighting cancer on every front; standing shoulder to shoulder with cancer patients and those supporting them. Last year, 2.7 million participants in the U.S. raised more than $279 million at more than 3,500 events to help beat our biggest rival. Funds raised help the American Cancer Society attack cancer in dozens of ways, each of them critical to achieving a world without cancer – from developing breakthrough therapies to building supportive communities, from providing empowering resources to deploying activists to raise awareness.

Local cancer survivor Jodi Davenport understands first-hand how vital these services are. "When I formed my team seven years ago, I had no idea what to expect. I was a new cancer survivor at that time, and I went into it with the intentions of doing everything I could to fight back for all of those who weren't able to for whatever reason. What I didn't expect, was to gain a whole new family in the process. To me, Relay for Life is so much more than pounding the pavement for donations. That part is important, don't get me wrong, but the family I have gained from this wonderful cause will last a lifetime for me. Celebrating those who have battled cancer, remembering those we have lost along the way, and fighting back for a future without the fear of cancer, continues to strengthen the bond that we share, even more, each new year. When I look at the teams around the track every year, I do not see people competing against each other, instead, I see a large group of people who support and encourage each other, and share a common goal – to do whatever it takes to bring cancer to its knees!" Founded by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Washington in 1985, the Relay For Life movement unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have been touched by cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action for lifesaving change. Symbolizing the battle waged around the clock by those facing cancer, the event can last up to 24 hours and empowers communities to take a stand against cancer.

In addition to the support of the community, Relay For Life of Genesee County is also supported by many local businesses and organizations.

Together, we can beat our biggest rival. Join or donate to the Relay For Life of Genesee County. Visit RelayForLife.org or www.relayforlife.org/geneseecountymi for more information. -- G.G.
