Photo by Joe Oster Davison – The Cardinal boys, who are the No. 3 seed in their region, open up Div. 1 MHSAA tournament play at home against the No. 6 seed Grand Blanc on Monday, May 21. The winner advances to the regional semifinal where the winner of No. 2 Midland versus No. 7 Lapeer will await. On the other side of the bracket, No. 1 Brighton plays No. 8 Holly tonight, and No. 4 Saginaw Heritage hosts No. 5 Oxford on Friday.

The regional semifinals will take place on Wednesday, May 23 with the first game starting at 5:30 p.m. and the nightcap to follow. The regional championship is scheduled for Tuesday, May 29 at 7 p.m. with the winner advancing the quarterfinals.

The Cardinals might be a dark horse to win the regional championship, as they are already familiar with half of the teams in the region. They’ve already beaten Grand Blanc, their first-round opponent, once this season, winning 17-3 back on May 4. Davison also previously beat Heritage 6-5 on May 7 and Lapeer 11-1 back on April 12. However, Midland beat the Cardinals 9-5 on April 27.

“We’re aiming to make it to the regional finals,” said Davison coach Craig Schaepkens. “We have made some adjustments offensively and in our clear that is tailor fit to our team and our personnel.”

GIRLS: The Lady Cardinals, with only a single win so far this season, will have their hands full in the Div. 2 state tournament. The Davison girls host Rochester in the pre-regional round on Saturday. The winner advances to the regional first round at Brother Rice High School on May 23, where Bloomfield Hills Marian awaits with a bye. The only other regional first round that is currently set is Detroit Country Day vs. Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook- Kingswood.

On the other side of the bracket, Rochester Hills Stoney Creek- Rochester Adams and Royal Oak- Warren Regina are the other pre-regional match-ups. Bloomfield Hills Academy of the Sacred Heart will play the winner of Stoney Creek-Adams, and Pontiac Notre Dame Prep will play the winner of Royal Oak-Regina in the regional first round games.

The regional semifinals will be on May 29 at Notre Dame Prep at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. The regional championship will take place June 1 at 6 p.m.

The Lady Cardinals have not played any teams in their region so far this season, but coach Darbie Barkman is optimistic for Davison’s future.

“Overall, the team has improved so much this year,” said Barkman after the Cardinals first win of the season on Monday. “I am ecstatic with their play.”
