Cardinals finish fourth at DCC Invitational

Photo by Austin VanDaele NOVI – The Davison wrestling team took fourth at the Detroit Catholic Central Invitational on Saturday, finishing with 153.5 points. Detroit Catholic Central’s Blue team was first with 209.9, Brownsburg (IN) was second with 187.5, Dakota was third with 156 and John Glenn was fifth with 119.5.

Oxford finished sixth with 88, Warren Woods-Tower had 84, Brighton 76, Hudson Area 71, Goodrich 62, and Detroit Catholic Central “White” 49. Lake Orion followed with 47.5, Marysville 35, Lapeer 32, St. John’s 27, Romeo 25 and Detroit Catholic Central “X” was 17th with 2.

At 145, Alex Facundo secured the team’s lone first-place finish on the day after receiving a first-round bye. Facundo then defeated Warren Woods- Tower by fall at 2:35 and Detroit Catholic Central by a 15-6 major decision to move into the first-place match, where he defeated John Glenn by a 7-3 decision for first.

Multiple wrestlers finished second, beginning with Steven Garty at 112, who began his day with a first-round bye. Garty then defeated Romeo by a 17-5 major decision and Brownsburg by a 5-2 decision to move to the first-place match. Once there, Garty lost to a Dakota opponent by fall to finish in second.

At 135, Marc Shaeffer finished second after opening his run with a win by fall over Romeo at 0:23. In the quarterfinal, Shaeffer defeated Jimmy McMillen of Goodrich by a 7-3 decision. He then defeated an Oxford opponent by fall at 4:00 before losing by a 5-0 decision to Detroit Catholic Central in the first-place match.

Cal Stefanko at 171 also finished second, beginning his tournament with a first-round bye. Stefanko defeated Lake Orion by technical fall in the quarterfinal and Oxford by a 7-1 decision in the semifinal before losing to a Dakota opponent by fall to end his day in second. Meanwhile, teammate Aaron Gilmore at 285 finished second after also receiving a first-round bye. Gilmore defeated Lake Orion by fall at 2:54 in the quarterfinal and Hudson Area by a 3-2 decision before losing to Brownsburg in a 4-3 decision in the first-place match.

At 160, Jay Nivison finished third following a first-round win over Brownsburg by a 10-2 major decision. In the quarterfinal, he defeated Warren Woods-Tower by a 12-4 major decision before losing to Dakota in the semifinal by a 3-0 sudden victory. In the third-place match, Nivison defeated Brighton by an 11-5 decision.

At 152, Brian Case finished fourth and began his day with a win by fall over Romeo at 0:23. Case then defeated Warren Woods-Tower by a 4-2 decision before losing to Brownsburg by technical fall. In the third-place match, Case lost to Marysville by sudden victory to finish fourth.

At 119, Jaron Wilson finished in sixth, defeating Marysville in his first-round match by a 21-7 major decision. Wilson then dropped his next match to Warren Woods-Tower by a 6-3 decision before defeating Brighton by fall at 4:38 and John Glenn by a 5-3 decision. In the fifth-place match, Wilson lost to Dakota by a 5-3 decision.

James Johnston at 125 began his day with a loss to Hudson Area by a 3-0 decision before defeating St. Johns by fall at 1:00. Johnson then lost to Detroit Catholic Central by a 5-0 decision to end his day. Teammate Raymond Cole at 140 started his run with a win by forfeit over Romeo before losing by an 11-3 major decision to Brownsburg. Cole then defeated Elijah Chaffin of Lapeer by a 6-1 decision before ending his day with a loss to Dakota following a 5-2 decision.

At 189, Trevor McGowan started with a first-round bye before falling to Detroit Catholic Central by a 1-0 decision. McGowan then had another bye before losing by a 3-1 decision to an Oxford opponent. Meanwhile, Travis Eads at 215 began his day with a win over John Glenn by a 3-1 decision before losing by major decision to Warren Woods-Tower. Eads then picked up a bye before losing to Romeo by a 7-3 decision.

Last Wednesday, the Cardinals competed in a Saginaw Valley League quad at Midland Dow. No results were reported.

Davison hosted another quad at home on Wednesday after press deadlines and will compete at the Detroit Catholic Central Duals on Saturday.

GETTING IT RIGHT

Last week, we incorrectly identified Davison wrestler Mackenzie Gilbert as a male athlete. Gilbert is a female competing at 103 lbs.
