The Cardinals opened the game with a 19-8 lead in the first, but Swartz Creek began to close the gap as the game progressed.

In the second, Davison extended its lead to 39-25. Davison then had a 20-17 quarter in the third to lead 59-42. But in the fourth, Swartz Creek put up a massive 27 points while Davison added only 16 for the 75-69 final.

“We were fortunate to get a road victory over a tough opponent on night one of the season,” said Davison coach Robert Hatten. “We had some very good runs during the game but need to play more consistent throughout all 32 minutes. We led by as many as 23 late in the third before Swartz Creek went on a great run of their own to cut it to four with about four minutes to go.”

Davison had 10 players score on the night, led by Austin Roland with 17 points. Cade Coleman added 13. Drew Fleming and Tyreese Watson added 11 each and Brendan Sullivan had nine. Swartz Creek’s Quay Humphries put up 22 points and snagged eight rebounds and Emmanuel Bates added 18 points and nine rebounds.

“We need to do a better job of playing with a lead and making a better shot selection,” Hatten added. “Our defense also looked tired in the fourth quarter and Swartz Creek was making plays. However, at the end of the night, we were able to leave with a victory that we can build from and we are happy about.”

Davison travels to Grand Rapids Christian tomorrow and hosts Detroit Loyola on Tuesday.
