On Friday, Sept. 8, the team members, cheerleaders, pom squad and marching band members are gathering for a reunion to celebrate and remember that snowy night 30 years ago.

The reunion will take place at Davison’s home football game with an announcement at half-time and a reunion party following at Madden’s Lounge, 809 N. State Road. The game is at 7 p.m. in Cardinal Stadium.

Davison resident Stacey Kalisz is assisting in organizing the event. She said the reunion was the idea of several of the former team members.

“Roy Hall, Eric Vickerman, Matt Thomas and Dave Elizondo came up with the idea for the event,” Kalisz said. “They asked for my help in get- ting the word out to the community as I am a friend and former classmate of theirs. Davison’s athletic director, Dave Beamer, has been extremely helpful in organizing the honoring of this football team, as has Davison's current head football coach, Kyle Zimmerman,” she added.

The legendary semifinal contest was held on Nov. 20, 1987. The Cardinals lost to the Ann Arbor Pioneers, the state champion that year, in a 35-14 match during a snowstorm at Atwood Stadium. "The 1987 team was coached by Dick DeLodge, Rick Zeller and Dennis Soulier. DeLodge was the team's head coach.

Eric Vickerman, a 1988 Davison High School graduate, played defensive end on the 1987 team. He said he knew the regional final was just a stepping stone to the semifinals. But the defeat at semifinals was very disappointing.

“We were champions and champions never get defeated,” he said. “We were all upset and disappointed. Our goal to win the state championship would never be completed.”

Looking back on the loss now, Vickerman says, “I look back and think about all the hard work we put in to get to that point, and I’m proud of the team.”

Roy Hall, a Davison High School teacher and wresting coach, is a 1988 graduate and played defensive back on the 1987 team.

“We didn’t achieve our goal but we laid a foundation and set the bar for the future,” Hall said. “Thirty years later our program is still chasing that dream,” added Hall, whose son, Cannon, is the quarterback on the current Cardinal’s roster.

For Kalisz, helping organize this reunion was a pleasure.

“Roy, Dave, Eric, Matt, and the entire

1987 football team are a great group of men,” she said. “It’s great to see how close many of them still are today. It has been an honor to help them with this event.”
