MCC receives grant from Kellogg Foundation

FLINT -- Mott Community College’s (MCC) Workforce Development Division will expand training and educational opportunities to ensure youth aged 16-24 have access to education that leads to immediate and long-term employment opportunities, including employment in both relief and rebuilding efforts related to the water and lead crisis in the city.

The expansion of work and career education pathways is being made possible by a $499,960 grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation of Battle Creek. Students will be able to access Workforce Development training programs as well as credit classes at MCC. The funding will enable expansion of health care, advanced manufacturing, information technology and pre-apprenticeship career offerings.

“This grant from the Kellogg Foundation is part of their overall commitment to increasing the number of children and families living above the poverty level,” said MCC President, Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea. “We are grateful to be one of the Kellogg Foundation’s partners in improving the lives of children and families in our community.”

“This grant will enable us to prepare unemployed, and train underemployed, youth for a variety of jobs and careers, including those related to the Flint water crisis,” said Robert Matthews, Associate Vice President for Workforce and Economic Development at the College. “Our ability to expand our training and academic offerings will go a long way toward addressing economic, health and social issues facing our community.”

The grant funding will span two years and will provide support to Opportunity Youth programs, including the Flint WaterWorks initiative. Youth participating in the Flint WaterWorks program will automatically qualify for funding. Students interested in pursuing career pathways at MCC can access the funds to pay for tuition, training fees and supportive services such as transportation assistance.
