DAVISON — The Lady Cardinals’ appearance in the state golf meet last year was such a momentous occasion, coach Darci Stocker jumped in a pond at the regional to honor a promise she’d made.

What’s the bet this year, coach?

Davison likely could make a return trip to the Div. 1 finals this fall, as four of its top six players return and more talent keeps coming up through the system.

The Lady Cardinals graduated Lauren Tessner and Nicole Wright from a team that earned the school’s first state qualifying berth since 1998 and finished 14th at Forest Akers West.

But their top two players return, in the form of senior Emily Lindsay and junior Laura Farah. Both players were All-Big Nine Conference and received All-State honorable mention.

Mariah Minzey is another returning junior with state tournament experience, and sophomore Andrea Richards also played in the Div. 1 finals.

“I think because of last year we’re better,” said Stocker, in her fourth season as coach. “We got a lot of valuable experience going to regionals and state, and we have four of the six girls that did that. They’re a year older and wiser, and they’ll be more relaxed and capable of performing better.”

Newcomers to the varsity includes juniors Madison Rosneck and Allison Swanson and freshman Kaylee Brookshire.

The junior varsity team also is booming, with 11 players on that squad. Stocker sweetened the incentive this summer by taking the team to the TreeTops resort in Gaylord for three days of bonding and golf.

“It’s a new tradition, and they want to do it again next year,” she said. “They had a blast. They have high goals again this year. They want to win the Big Nine and finish high in regionals so we can go to state again.”
