Political experience: None Community service: I believe that giving back to one’s community is an essential part of being a responsible citizen. I am a current board member for the Old Newsboys of Flint. I served as President of this organization during the 2008 calendar year presiding over a fundraising campaign involving hundreds of thousands of dollars as well as the purchase of a new warehouse facility. I am an advisory board member for the Human Service and Corrections Officer Program at Baker College. I am a Mason with Flint Lodge Number 23. I also attend and am a member of Atherton United Methodist Church. I am a past board member of Habitat for Humanity and the Consortium on Child Abuse and Neglect.

In your own words: As the first community prosecutor in Genesee County, I am proud to serve in the area where I was born, raised and still reside. Being the only law enforcement candidate running for 67th District Court Judge, I have first-hand professional and personal knowledge of the challenges we, as a community, face.

I have witnessed the worsening economy and its impact on this district, particularly by an increase in crime. Lending my expertise, I have contributed to and crafted solutions to enforce and prevent crime (Project Trust), to decrease truancy (Project Chalkboard) and to make our schools safer (Active Shooter Training Team).

At the same time, I have been encouraged by the resiliency and altruism shown in our community. Through my volunteer work with The Old Newsboys of Flint, Habitat for Humanity and the Consortium on Child Abuse and Neglect, I have seen citizens pull together to assist those in need.

Serving as District Judge during difficult economic times presents many challenges but also affords opportunities for change. It is essential to promote justice with a firm, yet, impartial hand. Situations like jail overcrowding require a judge who has knowledge of his constituents and who can maintain an unwavering sense of integrity. In addition, the current court system is plagued with inefficiencies. Having a leader on the bench who can organize and effect systemic change and create taxpayer savings when they are most needed is crucial.

Living in this community my whole life, I have a vested interest in what happens here. And, true to my personal and professional vision, I will be part of improving our community. I am dedicated to bringing my integrity, experience and community leadership to the bench as your next 67th District Court Judge.

I consider myself to be the working class candidate. I am endorsed by the UAW & GLS Building Trades. Most of the nation is experiencing a shortage of jobs, but Michigan and Genesee County have some of the highest un-employment rates in the nation. I have also owned my own business and created jobs. When I reach Lansing, I will not forget all those who are suffering under these current conditions in the 50th District. Words alone cannot pay employees, we need new ideas and concrete plans.

The state should use all available resources to “retrofit” (adding high efficiency alternatives such as lighting, windows and HVAC systems) to publicly owned buildings, making them as energy efficient as current technology allows. This would create jobs and help reduce energy costs. The state should purchase, on a preferential basis, from Michigan firms whenever possible, who use “green” technologies and create ecologically — friendly products. The state needs to create tax incentives for employers who keep jobs in Michigan and make sure that firms who outsource, pay their full share of taxes. Tax incentives should be given to businesses and people who buy local, made in Michigan products.

We must ensure that our children get a worldclass education. We must find new ways to fund schools on an equitable basis. We must have a curriculum that stresses science, math and problem solving. We need future leaders who can think beyond the status quo. I believe that we should tie the state legislator’s pay to the pay of the teachers in our public schools. If we cut teachers pay or benefits, then the legislator's pay and benefits should be cut accordingly.

We need to use all available brainpower, from both political parties, from all state universities, from labor unions and business leaders, who need to come together in a common cause to get Michigan’s economy rolling again. We all need to do our part by buying local, Michigan and American made products.
