Volunteers team up in broadband quest

GENESEE COUNTY — A volunteer group of community leaders and professionals are leading the charge to win the Google Fiber Project and now they want individuals to join in the effort.

Public and private sector professionals from across the county have come together over the past several weeks to compile the data required for Google’s much publicized ultra-high speed broadband project.

The group is working on completing Google’s Request For Information (RFI) by the March 26 deadline. The group is also calling on the area’s residents, organizations and businesses large and small and all government offices to join in on the effort by nominating Genesee County online at www.flintareabroadband.net .

“Our volunteer group will make sure the RFI is completed, but a very important part of our effort is getting as many people as possible to nominate Genesee County online,” said John Foster, a spokesperson for the volunteer group and coowner of Convergent Technology Partners.

The group has created www.flintareabroadband.net so anyone, anywhere can easily nominate Genesee

County for the Google Fiber for Communities project. The site has a Take Action button that gives individuals and organizations instructions on how to nominate Genesee County and other activities that can be taken to help Genesee County make the list of communities that will be wired by Google.

“We hope everyone will send the web site address and the simple instructions to everyone in their address book, all their Facebook followers and then tweet the message as well,” said Foster. “The RFI is important, but a strong showing by individuals will help us land this project.”

Local officials believe the Google fiber project would be an economic development game changer for Genesee County. The new infrastructure would be a magnet for hi-tech firms that would want to use the network which promises internet speeds 100 times faster than what is currently available. — G.G.
