Spartys are bowl eligible

Fat Guy’s Corner

Jeff Day — Sports Columnist Jeff Day — Sports Columnist The Michigan State Spartans picked up their sixth win at Purdue last Saturday. What does this mean?

The Spartans are going to a bowl game regardless of what happens on Saturday against the Penn State Nittany Lions. That’s probably a very good thing, considering the Spartans are underdogs at home against the Nittany Lions.

MSU needing a win would have been way too much pressure for the green and white. A signature win over PSU would give State a reasonable 7-5 record for the season.

That sounds much better than 6-6, doesn't it? I really think MSU will win this football game on Saturday. PSU has not really been impressive all season long. Let's face it, the Nittany Lions play awesome defense; the problem occurs on the other side of the ball with the offense.

PSU is offensively challenged. MSU will win if it does not turn over the football, and PSU thrives on turnovers. I look for a low-scoring football game.

Prediction: Lucky Seven 17 and No Lion King 16.

Michigan is stuck at win number five. The Wolverines have fallen on tough times as of late. If they do not defeat (and they won't) the Yuckeyes from Ohio State, it will be back-toback non-bowl appearances for the Wolverines.

The Wisconsin game last Saturday was just plain awful. The Wolverine defense is just disgusting to watch.

Rich Rod, please just do us a favor and resign, you are an utter embarrassment, and I think you stink as a head football coach.

Let's throw in the fact you can't fill in a practice log book to boot. This investigation could be more of your demise at Michigan. There was a time when this OSU and Michigan game was the rivalry and the game meant something. I would love to watch a close ball game and three yards and a cloud of dust. (Bo and Woody). Instead, I get Michigan left in the dust. Prediction: Sweaters R Us 27, Blue Footballs 13.

American League Rookie of the Year goes to Andrew Bailey of the Oakland "Pathetics". Bailey had a 1.84 ERA and 26 saves for Oakland.

I am a little shocked that Rick Porcello did not win this award. He kept Detroit in a pennant race and took the hill all season long for the Tigers. Rick, you are the Tigers’ fans’ rookie of the year.

Congratulations on a tremendous season in Motown. Let's not have a sophmore jinx, please.

While on the Tiger talk, what about the suggested trade rumors involving Grandy and Jackson? Hey, Detroit, don't do it. Fire Dave Dombrowski first; he signed Nate Robertson, Dontrelle Willis and Bonderman to huge payday.

Mark the Fat Guy's words: if they trade Edwin Jackson or Curtis

Granderson, it will be a huge mistake for your Tigers.

College basketball season has arrived and I am looking forward to watching MSU and Gonzaga tonight (Tuesday) on ESPN. MSU should be in for a super season on the hardwood.

Could coach Tom Izzo have another Final Four team in East Lansing? Spartan hoops are awesome and exciting once again. Michigan should have a decent year on the hardwood in 2009-10. I am looking for big things from them. College hoops are strong in the state of Michigan.
