DAVISON — Paul Snyder and his wife, Deanna Sytek Snyder, saw a need not only for a clothing store for youth in Davison, but for a way to try and revitalize the downtown area.

They recently opened their store, Elixer, 211 N. Main St., offering a range of clothing for teens and young adults with name brands offered at low prices.

“We have a mix for everyone,” said Paul, who has been in the clothing industry’s youth market for 27 years, “hence the name elixir.”

The store carries young men’s, junior’s and women’s clothing from such brands as Aeropostale, Abercrombie, Calvin Klein, O’Neill, Roxy, Nautica, Ralph Lauren and assorted brands.

The couple are also trying to work toward carrying more Made in the USA brands, with about 10 percent of their inventory right now being American-made.

“We wanted to offer trendy, fun clothing,” said Deanna, who grew up in Davison and is a local children’s author. “What’s big right now are the 80s are back. Thermals are also big, along with graphic t-shirts, flannel and leggings.”

Paul said the idea for the store is not only to offer nice clothing for a younger crowd, but to help draw young people downtown.

“It’s about the whole revitalization of downtown Davison,” he said. “We want kids to come downtown.”

He said they are asking their young customers about what kinds of clothing they want to see offered at the store and what would bring them downtown more often.

To help draw youth, Elixer is going to try and have local bands perform acoustic sets at the store once in awhile and Paul said he’s trying to have a small gallery at the store which will feature the artwork of Davison High School students.

His inspiration for the store’s trendy look inside has a lot to do with his years in the clothing market in Athens, Ga. Elixer is much like the stores he said he remembers from there.

“We wanted something similar to what a college town might have, like Athens,” said Deanna.

Having relocated back to Deanna’s hometown of Davison, the couple said they want to not only be a part of the community, but to give something back.

The store, Paul said, will hopefully be the start of something good.

“Remember the movie Finding Nemo?” he asked. “The last thing Nemo’s father tells him before he leaves for school is ‘go have an adventure.’ Well, this is our adventure.”

Elixer is open Monday- Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Details: 810-214-1100 or email elixerclothing@aol.com.
