Kindergarten students to get free, fitted bicycle helmets
DAVISON-RICHFIELD — Kindergarten students from Thomson, Hill and Siple elementary buildings will be fitted with free bicycle helmets during Safety Awareness Month in April.
Thomson Elementary students will receive their helmets at 8:45 a.m. and 12:40 p.m. Wednesday, April 9. Hill kindergarten students will be fitted at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, and Siple kindergartners will get their helmets at 9 a.m. on April 16.
All helmets are fitted by trained experts, including police officers from the city of Davison, Davison Township and Richfield Township. Police officers also instruct the students on bicycle safety. The annual effort is spearheaded by the Davison Area Youth Safety (DAYS) Committee and funded with grants from the Blue Care Network, Thomson, Siple and Hill PTO groups, and the Davison Optimist and Kiwanis clubs.
Since the program started eight years ago, more than 4,000 students have been fitted with bicycle helmets. — INDEX Staff
