Richfield man charged with vehicular homicide

An Oct. 31 preliminary exam is scheduled for a Richfield Township man charged with manslaughter with a motor vehicle after a Tuesday, Oct. 16 incident.

Dean Davis, 37, was arraigned before 67th District Judge Mark McCabe on Thursday, Oct. 18. Total bond was set at $275,000 for the five counts, which also include felony fleeing and eluding police and resisting and obstructing police.

Killed in the incident was Linda Haney, 56, of Otter Lake, and two other people were seriously injured in the crash on Dodge Road between Oak and Henderson Road.

According to state police Detective Sgt. Jason Teddy, a trooper attempted to stop Davis’ vehicle for speeding on M-15 (State Road) near Coldwater Road at about 11:30 a.m. Davis allegedly would not stop, and the chase proceeded north into Forest Township.

Haney was driving eastbound on Dodge when Davis approached from the rear. Police are waiting for a report from accident reconstructionists, but Teddy believes Davis either rear-ended Haney’s car or attempted to pass on the right. The result was to send Haney’s car across the center line into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

After the crash, Davis fled the scene, but was arrested around 5:30 p.m. after an intensive search which included a helicopter and a K-9 unit.

State police believe alcohol was a factor in the incident, but are awaiting results of a blood test, Teddy said.

"We always suspect alcohol or drugs, especially based on the actions we see," he said.

"There was nothing improper about the pursuit," Teddy said, but the state police understand the sensitivity surrounding the case. "We wouldn’t have submitted the charges in the first place if we didn’t intend to follow through with the prosecution."
